Instructor
What began as a single ceramics class quickly became a creative obsession for Missy Hitch. She soon found herself spending countless hours in the studio, exploring, learning, and refining her craft. After a decade of working with clay, she became a ceramics instructor at Prairie Arts Center, where she now teaches hand-building and beginning wheel classes.

Missy specializes in creating functional everyday pieces like mugs, baking dishes, and teapots, but she also enjoys crafting decorative work. She has led a wide range of workshops on projects such as yarn bowls, decorative plates, Valentine gnomes, and whimsical chickens. Over the years, she has gathered a wealth of techniques and tricks, which she loves sharing with her students to make pottery both fun and accessible. Whether at the wheel or in the classroom, Missy finds joy in helping others discover the magic of clay.

While wheel throwing can be a bit of a workout for your arms and core, don’t worry—think of it as a fun, creative way to skip the gym! Each session is designed to build your confidence and creativity as you explore the fundamentals of wheel throwing. To keep from getting too messy, aprons or towels are encouraged.

All materials and tools are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Join us in the studio and experience the joy of creating functional art from clay!

Art educator Jen Johnson holds an undergraduate degree in art history and English literature from the University of Kansas, as well as an MAT (Masters in the Art of Teaching) from the English Department at the University of Montana. In her own practice, Jen is equally invested in understanding the larger world through her interactions with the art objects of others and the making of her own art objects. Jen considers her greatest strengths as an educator to be the facilitation of reflective and critical conversations about art and art making, as well as the creation of safe environments for authentic explorations into the practices of self-expression and making. Her preferred mediums are mixed media, printmaking, and photography, but she enjoys the act of creation no matter the medium and considers it one of her greatest joys to make art alongside others.

The 2026 Payne County Bucket Calf Program is open to all youth ages 5-12, 4-H membership is not required.

Who Can Participate?

Youth ages 5-12 as of show dayMust be enrolled in Payne County Schools, a Payne County homeschool group or be a resident of Payne CountyWhat’s Involved?
Participants will:

Acquire a 1- to 10-day-old beef or dairy calf between April 15 and June 15, 2026Provide daily care, halter break their calf, and keep feed, financial, and health recordsNominate up to two calves by June 17, 2026 (only one may be exhibited)Be placed into an age group and evaluated on their knowledge and care of their projectParticipants have the option to exhibit a calf that remains on a nurse cow, a great way to gain hands-on experience in a real-world livestock setting!

This program is a fantastic way for young people to build responsibility, confidence, and life skills—all while having fun with their calf! If you or someone you know might be interested, please reach out, we’d love to help you get started!

Alyssa Couturier is a costume designer and educator. She received a BFA in fashion from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008. After graduating, she worked at various theaters and venues on the east coast as a costume designer and technician. She attended the University of Florida where she received an MFA in costume design. Her passion is to help directors and choreographers bring their vision to life through costume design and to teach the next generation essential skills in art and technology. She is currently an assistant professor of costuming at Oklahoma City University.

Instructor
Art educator Jen Johnson holds an undergraduate degree in art history and English literature from the University of Kansas, as well as an MAT (Masters in the Art of Teaching) from the English Department at the University of Montana. In her own practice, Jen is equally invested in understanding the larger world through her interactions with the art objects of others and the making of her own art objects. Jen considers her greatest strengths as an educator to be the facilitation of reflective and critical conversations about art and art making, as well as the creation of safe environments for authentic explorations into the practices of self-expression and making. Her preferred mediums are mixed media, printmaking, and photography, but she enjoys the act of creation no matter the medium and considers it one of her greatest joys to make art alongside others.

Get ready to explore, create and discover at 4-H STEM Day! Youth will dive into hands-on activities focused on science, technology, engineering and math through fun experiments and interactive challenges. Participants will build problem-solving skills, teamwork and creativity while exploring exciting STEM concepts in a welcoming environment. 4-H STEM Day is a great opportunity for youth to learn new skills, spark curiosity and see how STEM connects to the world around them.

Art educator Jen Johnson holds an undergraduate degree in art history and English literature from the University of Kansas, as well as an MAT (Masters in the Art of Teaching) from the English Department at the University of Montana. In her own practice, Jen is equally invested in understanding the larger world through her interactions with the art objects of others and the making of her own art objects. Jen considers her greatest strengths as an educator to be the facilitation of reflective and critical conversations about art and art making, as well as the creation of safe environments for authentic explorations into the practices of self-expression and making. Join us for the 4-H Horticulture Propagation Workshop and discover the exciting world of growing plants! Participants will get hands-on experience with plant propagation techniques, including seed starting and rooting cuttings, while learning the basics of plant growth and care. Whether you're new to gardening or already have a green thumb, this workshop is a fun way to build skills, explore plant science and grow something of your own. We hope to see you there!

Youth will learn the basics of making pizza from scratch, including preparing dough, choosing toppings and baking the perfect pizza. Participants will build kitchen confidence while practicing food safety, creativity and teamwork. This course is intentionally designed for Oklahoma community as a watercolor 101 course. No prior art experience is required.

The course uses a project-based teaching approach. Participants will complete guided watercolor art work each week. It offers a gentle, guided painting experience you can complete at your own pace from home, or in your own calm and judgment-free environment.

This course is intentionally designed for Oklahoma community as a watercolor 101 course. No prior art experience is required.

The course uses a project-based teaching approach. Participants will complete guided watercolor art work each week. It offers a gentle, guided painting experience you can complete at your own pace from home, or in your own calm and judgment-free environment.

What began as a single ceramics class quickly became a creative obsession for Missy Hitch. She soon found herself spending countless hours in the studio, exploring, learning, and refining her craft. After a decade of working with clay, she became a ceramics instructor at Prairie Arts Center, where she now teaches hand-building and beginning wheel classes.

Missy specializes in creating functional everyday pieces like mugs, baking dishes, and teapots, but she also enjoys crafting decorative work. She has led a wide range of workshops on projects such as yarn bowls, decorative plates, Valentine gnomes, and whimsical chickens. Over the years, she has gathered a wealth of techniques and tricks, which she loves sharing with her students to make pottery both fun and accessible. Whether at the wheel or in the classroom, Missy finds joy in helping others discover the magic of clay.

Join us for a Wellness Wednesday focused on Substance Abuse Trends in Adolescents on August 5th, presented by Rachel May. This session will explore current trends in adolescent substance use, risk factors, warning signs, and the impact on mental and physical health. Attendees will gain valuable insight, practical information, and helpful resources, along with the opportunity to ask questions in a supportive, educational environment. Together, we can increase awareness, promote prevention, and support healthier outcomes for youth.

Free to employees currently enrolled in an OSU benefits plan. No Shows will be charged $20 to their Bursar.

The ITA test is a five minute (timed) teaching presentation given to an audience of test raters and other students who are taking the test. After the presentation is finished, there is a 3-5 minute period for questions from the audience. Guidance on how to prepare for the exam is available here.

The raters consist of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students. If your graduate program sends a faculty representative, that person may also ask questions about your presentation.

The cost of the ITA is $75 and will be billed to your department. ITA exams are grouped by graduate program and the scheduled time may vary depending upon the number of students registered from each graduate program. The final schedule is usually released the day before the exam.

The fair, held in Gallagher-Iba Arena, brings together employers and students for networking, career exploration and recruiting. Registration must be completed on ZSuite by 5 p.m., September 18, by the County Educator, or it will not be accepted. Payment must be postmarked by September 18, 2026, and checks must be made to Payne County OSU Extension.

The county’s Oklahoma 4-H Certified Coach must attend the contest with 4-H members.

By registering a youth member in ZSuite, the educator certifies that the participating youth meet the minimum requirements to participate in this event:
