Join us as we dig into the basic elements and methods of composting!

 

Composting is nature’s way of recycling organic waste into useful soil-like material called humus or compost. Organic materials such as grass clippings, leaves, yard trimmings, food scraps and non-recyclable paper products can be can be composted at home in compost bins, piles, or worm bins.

 

The is a four-part series hosted from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Oct. 22 and 29, and Nov. 5 and 12, at The Botanic Garden Horticulture Education Center. Participants can attend a single class or all of them - the choice is yours!

 

Classes will include the below topics and more: 

  • Oct. 22:  
    • What is Soil - Dr. Daniel Adamson, Soil and Water Conservation State Extension Specialist
    • Solid Waste & Recycle Program - Keima Borsuah, Solid Waste Assistant Extension Specialist
  • Oct. 29: 
    • Types of Composting Bins - Josh Campbell, Ph.D., Assistant State Program Specialist
    • Breaking it Down:  Organic Matter in the Garden - Courtney Dekalb, Assistant Extension Specialist in Consumer Horticulture
  • Nov. 5:
    • Vermicomposting - Dr. Douglas Hamilton, Waste Management Extension Specialist
    • Icebox Test & Japanese "Under Sink" Composter - Dr. Douglas Hamilton, Waste Management Extension Specialist
  • Nov. 12:
    • Group Project Presentation - Examples include how to build a composting bin, informational flyer on composting, children's composting program
    • Make & Take Vermicomposting Bin - Kathryn Ross, Payne County Master Gardener

 

Cost is $30 for all four classes or $10/each class.
