Below Deck and Mission-Critical: Electromagnetic Compatibility and Safety
Modern aircraft and spacecraft are packed with electronics that must operate reliably inside highly reflective metal structures, and many support systems are below deck and out of sight. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the discipline that ensures these systems can coexist without interfering with one another in ways that could degrade performance or compromise safety. But in these confined environments, the challenge extends beyond electronics alone. Engineers must also consider the Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO) and to Personnel (HERP), where electromagnetic energy can pose risks to sensitive munitions or to the people working nearby. In this installment of OSU Research on Tap, OSU VP for Research Kenneth Sewell will interview electrical engineer Chuck Bunting to explore how engineers measure and understand electromagnetic emissions and susceptibility in complex mission environments. When signals bounce, couple, and interact in ways that defy simple intuition, you can’t just “point an antenna and be done.” You’ll hear how this research supports the safe and reliable operation of critical systems, equipment, and personnel in aircraft and space systems.
Connecting the community.
With a different researcher each month from the sciences, arts and humanities Research on Tap is an opportunity to have a conversation regarding their work and the impact it has on you and your community.
We hope you will join us the third Monday of each month to enjoy some of Stillwater’s own local brew while chatting about some of the interesting research happening here on the OSU campus. The event begins with approximately 20 minutes of conversation between the Vice President of Research and the researcher, followed by questions and answer session with the audience.
